Blueberry glut looms, as Japan bans imports

Australians will see a dramatic increase in the amount of blueberries for sale this summer. This month, Japan has banned the importation of Australian blueberries, because it's concerned about Mediterranean fruit fly. Coupled with a harvest two months later than usual, due to excessively wet conditions earlier this year, 25 per cent more berries will be dumped on the domestic market. Peter McPherson, from Australia's largest blueberry producer, Berry Exchange, says wheels are in motion to reopen the Japanese market. "The Japanese authorities are working with us and Biosecurity Australia to try and find a solution," he said.
